West Bay

March 24, 2011 By: admin Category: Places

West Bay sits in between Lyme Regis and Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coastline in Dorset. Key features in the town include its quaint fishing harbour and the two high quality beaches which sit either side of it. There’s East Beach, which extends along the coast to Portland Bill, and West Beach, which is close to West Pier and the Esplanade, and is especially recommended for Children. For those looking for something more extreme than sunbathing, West bay is also a good launch point for Paragliders, and has facilities for water sports enthusiasts.

It’s also a central point in the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Coastline, with many countryside and coastal walks available along its 95 mile stretch. Other sports available in West Bay include Golf at an East Cliff course, sea fishing, and deep sea diving, as the bay is renowned for ship wrecks.

West Bay’s other claim to fame is its use as a filming location, featuring in the program ‘Harbour Lights’, and the harbours other appearance (renamed Port Bredy), in various Thomas Hardy Novels. The immortalised harbour, and its West and East Piers, are popular with families, who also enjoy hiring river boats and going crabbing in this area.

West Bay also has pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, and an ample selection of holiday cottages, hotels and bed and breakfasts, if you want to stay in the town. Many visitors choose to take a trip inland and visit or stay in nearby Bridport, which has a wealth of attractions to explore. The market town is steeped in history, which you can find out about in the museum, while the town also has a leisure centre, the Bridport Arts Centre, a regular open-air market, and choice of both familiar high street names, and unusual small shops.

Staying in either Westbay or Bridport will open up a wealth of possibilities for day trips to places like Farway Country Park in Colyton, Devon, The Great Dorset Maize Maze in Rodden, Dorset and Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub Tropical Gardens in Abbotsbury.

If this all sounds like your ideal holiday, then you can reach West Bay via Bournemouth and Exeter Airports, a train route from London Waterloo to Dorcester South, and onto West Bay by bus or taxi, or finally by road from London or Bristol.
